Jeremy Pope's Journey: from Broadway Breakout to Trailblazing Lgbtq+ Icon
Television magnate Ryan Murphy recognized Pope’s presence immediately, casting him as the central lead in the 2020 Netflix limited series Hollywood. Pope played Archie Coleman, a talented, ambitious Black screenwriter navigating the brutal racial and sexual taboos of post-World War II Los Angeles. The role reimagined what studio-era entertainment could have looked like if queer creators of color had been allowed to tell their stories openly.
Playing Archie required confronting the exact systemic gatekeeping Pope sought to dismantle in real life. In the series, Archie refuses to write under a pseudonym, choosing visibility over convenient obscurity. The performance earned Pope an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, proving his magnetic screen appeal to a global audience.
Murphy also tapped Pope to join the final season of the historic FX drama Pose as Christopher, a warm, affirmative physician who falls in love with Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista (played by Mj Rodriguez). Pope brought deep sensitivity to the screen, demonstrating an instinctive grasp of nuanced, compassionate storytelling.
