The contemporary confusion around "Cage memes" accelerated dramatically following the 2022 release of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. In one sequence, Pedro Pascal portrays eccentric billionaire Javi Gutierrez driving alongside a fictionalized version of Nicolas Cage. Pascal turns toward Cage with an ecstatic, wide-eyed grin while driving down a coastal road under the influence of LSD. Cage turns back with a look of exhausted, silent, grim determination.

By early 2023, TikTok creators extracted this two-shot sequence and paired it with Cass Elliot’s 1969 anthem "Make Your Own Kind of Music." The template exploded, amassing hundreds of millions of views across global feeds. Creators used the format to illustrate opposing viewpoints: one person blissfully unaware of an incoming disaster while their partner watches in stunned silence.

This driving template cross-pollinated with caged pet videos. Creators began pairing Pascal's sunny grin with outdoor birds enjoying freedom, juxtaposed against Cage's sour expression mapped directly onto a trapped parrot sitting inside a wire cage. The visual joke landed so effectively that many casual mobile viewers assumed the scene derived from a film where Cage played a literal or symbolic prisoner in an aviary. The visual pun closed the loop: the actor's face, the concept of a cage, and actual avian footage merged into a single viral sensation.
