Platform engineers build communication tools around psychological reciprocity. If users could quietly observe everyone else's live browsing habits without ever exposing their own, overall engagement metrics would dip. Meta prevents this by imposing a strict mirror rule: shut off your presence, and the platform cuts off your window into other people's live movements.
User sentiment on forums like Reddit reflects widespread support for that bargain. Many accounts report that losing access to other people's status actually reduces social anxiety. You stop checking whether an acquaintance opened your reel forty minutes ago or whether a romantic partner is lingering inside their inbox late at night. The interface morphs into an asynchronous bulletin board instead of an urgent, surveillance-driven walkie-talkie.
