How to Watch Small Sacrifices (1989): Streaming Options, Dvd Releases, and Viewer Faqs
Before Small Sacrifices reached the screen, Ann Rule established the standard for modern investigative literature. Rule, a former Seattle police officer who had worked alongside serial killer Ted Bundy, spent years documenting Diane Downs' trial in Eugene, Oregon. Her 1987 book provided the foundation for Joyce Eliason’s screenplay.
The narrative power stems from unyielding focus on prosecutor Fred Hugi (renamed Frank Joziak in the film, portrayed by John Shea). Hugi not only prosecuted Downs but eventually adopted her two surviving children, Christie and Danny. When Christie Downs took the witness stand, having recovered enough speech following a stroke caused by the gunshot wound, she pointed across the room at her mother. The courtroom sequence works because it adheres almost verbatim to the official trial transcripts, grounding the television drama in authentic legal tragedy.
