By Elena Rostova
Aggregated data from community-wide reading habit trackers offers an objective look at shifting media diets across the internet. Each year, projects like the community-compiled AO3 annual ship stats examine thousands of public bookmarks and reading records, capturing changes in fandom habits.
The 2025 reading year was defined by high-profile rivalries among leading pairings. Data reported by TheGamer highlighted heated debates as Jayce and Viktor from Arcane climbed to the top of AO3's annual pairing rankings following the animated series' dramatic final season. Their rapid rise pushed against classic, deeply entrenched ships that have anchored the archive for over a decade.
Long-running dynamics from television and cinema continue to generate tens of millions of logged words. The Supernatural archive remains an unstoppable reading engine, with Dean Winchester/Castiel continuing to draw sustained bookmark and kudos activity across every major demographic. At the same time, the transformative power of fan works gained fresh visibility through the Captain America fandom's Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes pairing. The ship helped lay the creative groundwork for the viral hockey romance Heated Rivalry, which moved into television adaptation in 2025. These recurring community trends show that even as new media franchises spark short-term reading spikes, older relationship dynamics retain extraordinary staying power on the platform.
