How to Calculate Your Gpa Step-by-Step: Clear Breakdown of Quality Points and Weighted Credits
Computing a grade point average rests on one standard mathematical relationship: quality points divided by attempted credit hours. Most students intuitively know that an "A" is worth four points on an unweighted scale, but treating an A in a four-credit laboratory science course the same as an A in a one-credit elective leads to false totals.
Quality points measure the real numerical weight of a specific class. You find this value by multiplying the numerical point value of the letter grade earned by the course credit hours. For example, earning an A (4.0 points) in a 4-credit biology lecture yields 16.0 quality points. Earning an A in a 1-credit physical education course yields only 4.0 quality points.
To establish your semester or term GPA, add all quality points earned across every graded class, then divide that sum by the total number of attempted graded credits. Courses completed on a Pass/Fail or Audit basis do not carry point values and do not count toward your attempted graded credits.
