By Season 5, puberty presented an operational dilemma for the production team. White was turning 17. His natural speaking voice had deepened, his shoulders had broadened, and sustaining Urkel's high-octave voice during long shoot days began causing acute vocal cord strain. The solution fundamentally altered the show's DNA.

The writers leaned hard into speculative science fiction. Urkel constructed a garage laboratory featuring a teleportation pad, cloning vats, and the iconic "transformation chamber." By drinking a concoction designed to isolate his "cool genes," Steve turned into Stefan Urquelle. The suave, smooth-talking character allowed White to act in his natural baritone, stand at his full posture, and drop the physical ticks of the geek persona. The shift delighted fans of the romantic tension between Urkel and Laura Winslow (played by Kellie Shanygne Williams). More importantly, it preserved White's vocal health long enough to carry the series to its conclusion.
