Despite early regional recognition, Zefanya pursued traditional academic credentials. In 2017, at age 18, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to enroll at Lipscomb University, studying music business. Nashville’s rigorous focus on song structure deeply influenced her technical discipline, yet her stay in Tennessee proved brief.
Around that time, fellow Indonesian artist Rich Brian discovered her independently released songs "Polaroid Boy" and "Anaheim" on YouTube. Brian passed her material to Sean Miyashiro, the founder of pioneering collective and media company 88rising. Impressed by her vocal agility and raw self-production, Miyashiro offered her an official management and recording contract.
Zefanya made the high-stakes decision to withdraw from Lipscomb University, relocate to Los Angeles, and officially join the 88rising roster as the label's first prominent female solo artist. That leap quickly reshaped the collective's cultural reach, expanding its sonic identity beyond hip-hop into forward-thinking contemporary R&B.
