Haru Urara Passes Away at 29: the Tragic Farewell to Japan's Beloved Underdog Horse
Following her 113th consecutive loss in August 2004, Haru Urara retirement plans were bogged down by contractual infighting between owners and commercial promoters. For several years, her whereabouts were unclear, stoking public anxiety that she had quietly ended up in an abattoir, a fate common for unproductive thoroughbreds.
In 2014, horse welfare advocates located her at Martha Farm in Onjuku, Chiba Prefecture. Former fans mobilized to form the "Haru Urara no Kai" (Haru Urara Society), a fan-supported monthly membership system that fully underwrote her veterinary bills, high-calorie feed, and pasture upkeep. Free from competition, she grew affectionate and relaxed, spending days grazing alongside retired companion horses.
Care staff at the farm reported that the mare’s health declined slowly over several weeks due to natural geriatric frailty. She lost her appetite and struggled to stand, conditions common in thoroughbreds approaching their thirtieth year. Her official cause of death was attributed to old age. At 29, she had outlived the average thoroughbred lifespan by nearly five years, a longevity made possible by the dedicated care of the fans she once failed to cash tickets for.
