Gracie Fight Video Timeline: from Early Nhb Brawls to Modern Ufc Bjj Showdowns
Following the American explosion, attention shifted across the Pacific to Japan. Vale Tudo Japan tournaments in 1994 and 1995 showcased Rickson Gracie, widely considered the family's premier fighter. The acclaimed 1999 documentary Choke tracked Rickson during his 1995 campaign in Tokyo. Directed by Robert Goodman, the film gave combat sports fans an unprecedented behind-the-scenes view: Rickson performing diaphragmatic breathing exercises on cold beaches, preparing mentally in locker rooms, and choking out Yuki Nakai despite the Japanese fighter's desperate resistance.
Japan soon became the battleground for Pride FC Gracie fights. The dynamic changed when Kazushi Sakuraba, a brilliant catch wrestler with unpredictable movements, took on the family. Between 1999 and 2000, Sakuraba defeated Royler, Royce, Renzo, and Ryan Gracie, earning the moniker "The Gracie Hunter." The historic May 1, 2000 clash between Royce and Sakuraba lasted an incredible 90 minutes across six 15-minute rounds before Royce's corner threw in the towel due to Royce's broken femur. This grueling footage marked the end of pure BJJ dominance and signaled the birth of integrated, modern mixed martial arts.
