From Tough Loss to Preseason Grit: Is Chet Holmgren Primed for a Breakout?
By Chloe Bennett
The rivalry between Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama will shape the Western Conference for the next decade. Their spring 2026 postseason clash brought that dynamic into sharp relief. Over a brutal six-game series, San Antonio leaned on Wembanyama's length and aggressive downhill sets to wear down Oklahoma City's interior defense. Holmgren battled admirably, contesting shots at the rim and stretching the floor, but the physical toll proved cumulative. By Game 5, San Antonio dominated second-chance points and controlled the paint, forcing Oklahoma City into difficult perimeter adjustments.
That series exposed structural pressure points in the Thunder frontcourt. While Holmgren's timing as a weak-side shot blocker remained elite, San Antonio consistently isolated him on the low block and forced him to defend through heavy body contact. The numbers told a blunt story. Oklahoma City surrendered an uncharacteristic 54.2 points in the paint per game during the series, while Holmgren's personal shooting percentages dropped late in fourth quarters due to exhaustion. Rather than deflect responsibility, Holmgren acknowledged the tactical deficit immediately after the final buzzer, describing the defeat as an expensive education.
The experience recalibrated his approach. Facing Wembanyama requires more than length and instinct; it demands core leverage, lower-body anchor power, and the ability to absorb contact without giving up real estate. That playoff series eliminated any remaining complacency within the Thunder locker room. It established a concrete standard of what Holmgren must overcome to reach the NBA Finals.
