From Saint Michael to Calabasas: How Rihanna Remained a Barbadian Citizen
Before selling hundreds of millions of records and reshaping modern retail, Robyn Rihanna Fenty grew up in a modest three-bedroom bungalow on Westbury New Road in Saint Michael, Barbados. Born in 1988, she spent her formative years selling clothes on street stalls with her father and singing along to reggae, soca, and American R&B. Her talent caught the attention of American record producer Evan Rogers while he was vacationing on the island in late 2003.
By 2005, at just 16 years old, she boarded a flight to New York City to audition for Jay-Z at Def Jam Recordings. The executive famously refused to let her leave the building until an agreement was signed. That moment transported a teenager from Bridgetown into the heart of the American entertainment machine. Her relocation, however, was framed entirely through commercial work authorizations. She arrived under specialized non-immigrant visas, entering the United States purely as an overseas cultural worker under corporate contract.
