From 'Purpose' to 2026 Viral Sensation: the Complete Evolution of 'Love Yourself'
By Robert Thorne
When Def Jam Recordings issued "Love Yourself" as the third official single from Purpose in November 2015, the song pulled off a rare double play. It replaced Bieber's own smash "Sorry" at the Billboard Hot 100 number one position, making him only the twelfth artist in the chart’s history to succeed himself at the top spot. It went on to finish as Billboard's number one single of the entire year in 2016.
Industry honors quickly followed. The track earned Bieber a high-profile Grammy Song of the Year nomination and a nod for Best Pop Solo Performance, while picking up International Song of the Year at France's prestigious NRJ Music Awards. Decades after the initial chart run, its metrics hold up remarkably well against the high-energy EDM singles that flanked it.
