From Prep Fields to Ole Miss: How the Bta Trend Took over College Football
By David Miller
The grassroots routine became a national spectacle when it hit Oxford, Mississippi. Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy adopted the celebration after scoring drives, violently snapping his arms in an exaggerated belt-whip motion toward cheering student sections.
The movement reached a bizarre peak in early November 2025, when local media pressed head coach Lane Kiffin about the strange gesture overtaking his stadium. According to postgame reporting by The Clarion-Ledger, Kiffin admitted he initially had no idea what his own fans were doing when thousands stood up and mimicked whipping leather belts after big plays. Once offensive players and graduate assistants explained the Ole Miss football trend to him, Kiffin leaned directly into the spectacle, even referencing the Lane Kiffin belt celebration on his personal X account.
That endorsement cracked the barrier between niche youth slang and mainstream sports television. ESPN cameras began tracking the Ole Miss sideline specifically to capture players brandishing real, customized team championship belts while the crowd chanted "B-T-A" in unison. The visual proved irresistible for broadcast producers seeking high-engagement social clips.
