From Paxton Hall-Yoshida to Chicago Med: Darren Barnet's Complete Career Evolution
The character conceived by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher was initially envisioned as an aloof archetype. He was written into the pilot as Paxton Hall, a handsome swimmer at Sherman Oaks High whose primary narrative function was to fuel the comedic ambitions of Devi Vishwakumar. That changed during the production of season one. Barnet, who is of Japanese, Swedish, and Cherokee descent, was overheard speaking Japanese with an assistant director between takes. Kaling immediately walked up to him and asked about his ethnic background.
Soon after, Kaling asked if he would mind if the writers incorporated his Japanese heritage into the show. Barnet enthusiastically agreed, prompting the writers to rechristen the character Paxton Hall-Yoshida. This was not a superficial rebranding. By weaving his background into the character's domestic life, the series opened up fresh narrative territory. Viewers were introduced to his family, particularly his grandfather, played by veteran actor Clyde Kusatsu. Instead of lingering as a teenage fantasy, Paxton acquired cultural specificity and multi-generational ties.
