Fact-Checking Smith Hall Rumors: Closures, Utilities, and What's Real
A major catalyst for building closure rumors was the University of Washington’s transition to automated electronic perimeter security. Historically, Quad facilities remained unlocked until late in the evening, allowing anyone to enter hallways regardless of class enrollment.
Under current UW building access and safety standards, perimeter doors automatically lock outside standard public hours. Smith Hall UW building hours generally run from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
After 6:00 p.m. and across weekends, the exterior doors require a valid Husky Card tap. Only students enrolled in evening courses in Smith, designated faculty, graduate researchers, and authorized departmental staff have tap-access permissions. When students arrive at 6:15 p.m. for an informal study group and find the outer doors locked, they frequently assume an emergency closure occurred. In reality, the building is simply following its programmed security perimeter.
Official emergency closures are never communicated through word-of-mouth or unverified social channels. Genuine alerts pass through the UW Alert system via SMS, email, and postings on the official emergency blog.
