Active-duty military pay does not transfer directly from the Pentagon to your checking account at the push of a button. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) coordinates military active duty pay through strict statutory cycles. Military service members receive compensation twice a month: the mid-month pay date and the end of month pay date. DFAS establishes the 1st and the 15th of each month as official paydays. When either date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday, the official payday moves to the closest prior business day.

Several business days before payday, DFAS transmits an Automated Clearing House (ACH) file to the Federal Reserve. This file acts as an advance notification detailing which service member gets paid, the net dollar balance, and the receiving financial institution. Navy Federal Credit Union reads these incoming ACH files ahead of time. Once the credit union confirms the pending transfer from the government, it initiates internal processing rules depending on the recipient's specific account tier.
