For more than a century, batting average (BA) dictated how hitters were evaluated and paid. The equation for batting average is simple: Hits divided by At-Bats. But the equation hides a massive structural flaw: walks are not counted as at-bats. A hitter who goes to the plate four times, draws three walks, and strikes out once finishes the day 0-for-1, lowering his batting average despite successfully reaching base 75% of the time.

This is where On-Base Percentage (OBP) corrects the record. OBP includes walks and hit-by-pitches in the numerator, dividing them by total plate appearances. When combined with Slugging Percentage (SLG) to calculate OPS (On-Base Plus Slugging), front offices gain a near-complete picture of a player's real offensive weight. A player with a .250 batting average and a .370 on-base percentage is infinitely more valuable to an offense than an undisciplined free-swinger batting .280 with a .300 on-base percentage.
