Fact-Checking Grell Sutcliff's Debut: Butler Premiere Vs. Grim Reaper True Form Explained
Mangaka Yana Toboso designed Grell's transformation to disrupt reader expectations regarding Victorian gothic tropes. In the pages of Square Enix’s Monthly GFantasy, Grell first stepped onto the page in Chapter 6 (collected in Volume 2), behaving with the exact same self-deprecating ineptitude seen in the broadcast series.
The pacing, however, carried distinct differences. The manga did not feature the anime-original mafia shootout with Azzurro Vanel from Episode 2. Instead, Toboso plunged readers straight into the Jack the Ripper storyline. When the Shinigami reveal occurred in Chapter 10, it hit readers with stark visual violence. Toboso used high-contrast ink work to showcase Grell slicing through cobblestone walls and human flesh alike, establishing the supernatural hierarchy that governs the Black Butler universe.
