Deciphering the Visuals and Drafts: the Hidden Details in Come as You Are
When MTV demanded a video for the single, Cobain refused conventional performance setups. He hired Kevin Kerslake, who had directed the clip for "Sliver," trusting him to bypass generic grunge cliches. The Kevin Kerslake music video visuals translated the sonic wetness of the Small Clone pedal directly onto the screen.
Kerslake ran visual projections over cascading sheets of falling water, filming the musicians through rippling liquid tanks. These water distortion and visual motifs mirrored the cover of Nevermind, but with a claustrophobic edge. Instead of a pristine swimming pool, the band was placed in an obscure, dimly lit room resembling a flooded basement.
Cobain actively concealed his face throughout the shoot. He swings from an indoor chandelier, hangs upside down, and lets his hair shroud his eyes. In various shots, a sperm cell travels across the lens, a dog rests on a couch, and a baby swims through blue currents. Cobain insisted on these fragmented images to disrupt standard rock-star iconography, ensuring the band remained enigmatic even on high-rotation television.
