Fact Check: the Truth Behind the 'Black Face Labubu' Tiktok Controversy
The original video documented the customization step-by-step. The creator prepped the doll, mixed dark acrylic pigment, and systematically painted over the character's light-colored vinyl faceplate. To finalize the likeness, she added a miniature black patterned bandana across the forehead, KSI’s signature fashion accessory, alongside styled synthetic hair extensions to imitate his locs.
The creator posted the reveal with enthusiastic captions tagging KSI and his content collective, the Sidemen. Her stated intent was celebrating the entertainer. But visual art does not exist in an intentional vacuum.
When dark pigment was applied to Labubu's face, the contrast between the painted dark skin, the massive unpainted pink gums, and the sharp white teeth created an exact visual analog to historic anti-Black propaganda. For centuries, American minstrel theater and British children's literature relied on identical visual tropes: pitch-black skin, oversized teeth, and wildly exaggerated jaws designed to dehumanize Black people. Observers did not see a boxing tribute; they saw an artifact straight out of the Jim Crow era.
