Fact Check: Does Minho Survive Maze Runner: the Death Cure?
The confusion surrounding Minho's fate often stems from emotional displacement. Casual fans remember a tragic, franchise-defining death in the third act, but misattribute it to Minho instead of Newt.
Newt’s death scene stands as the most devastating sequence in the entire property. Unlike Thomas and Minho, Newt was not immune to the Flare virus. In the book, Newt deteriorates rapidly in Denver, succumbs to the Crank virus, and begs Thomas to shoot him in the head along a desolate highway, a request Thomas tearfully fulfills.
In the film version, the confrontation unfolds in the heart of the burning Last City. As Minho runs to safety, Newt loses his final grip on sanity, attacking Thomas with a combat knife before turning the blade into his own chest. Because Minho is the driving motivation behind that entire urban rescue mission, the emotional shockwave of Newt's demise often gets tangled with Minho's survival in audiences' memories. Minho reaches safety, but the cost of his extraction is the loss of his oldest friend.
