Fact Check: Does Logging out of Instagram Erase Your Data?

Signing out often looks deceptive because returning to the app shows your avatar waiting on the home screen. Tapping your picture logs you straight back in without asking for a password. This convenience frequently leads people to believe the logout failed.
This happens because of saved login information stored within Apple Keychain, Google Smart Lock, or Meta's own localized credential caches. The application removed your active session token, but your operating system retained your encrypted username and password. To enforce a total disconnect on a shared or public computer, you must manually select "Manage Accounts" and choose "Remove Account" from the initial splash screen. This strips local auth tokens, requiring manual entry of your credentials alongside any hardware keys or security prompts.
