Fact-Check: Can People Still Tell You Are Online When Activity Status Is off on Instagram?
The most common fear among users attempting to establish an unofficial ghost mode on Instagram is that opening an incoming DM will bypass their privacy preferences. To assess this, we ran controlled tests across iOS, Android, and desktop browsers using coordinated test accounts to isolate network signals.
When you disable your active status, you can open the app, browse your main feed, navigate Reels, and read through your inbox directory without triggering a single notification or badge on another user's screen. Your test contacts see no active state. The interface leaves no trace of background scrolling.
The boundary fails the instant you open an unread conversation thread. Active status and message read receipts operate through distinct network services within Instagram direct message privacy controls. Unless you independently switch off Read receipts, opening a message instantly flags the incoming payload as viewed. The sender's screen will replace the delivered marker with a seen status in chat alongside a precise timestamp. Your friends cannot tell that you were browsing your feed ten minutes ago, but they know with complete certainty that you held their message open at 11:42 PM.
