A fresh look at Everything You Need to Know About the Gaikwad Caste, Heritage, and Famous Figures, offering readers the most relevant details.

The Gaikwad surname origins trace back to agricultural and martial strongholds across Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, and the Deccan plateau. Etymologically, popular folklore links the word to the phrase Gaye (cow) and Kavad (door or portal), pointing to ancient defenders or pastoral gatekeepers. Historically verified records link the name directly to the martial elite who staffed the armies of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate and later coalesced under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during the founding of the Maratha Empire.

Within the Maharashtra caste hierarchy, the Gaikwads occupy a verified seat within the 96 Kuli Maratha structure, the traditional register of ninety-six aristocratic clans claiming royal Kshatriya lineage. Inclusion in this roster required specific genealogical markers, codified heraldry, and recognized familial devotions:

• Primarily associated with the Kashyap or Gautam Gotra, depending on the branch's original regional settlement.
• Kuldaivat (Family Deities): Reverence centered on Khandoba of Jejuri, Bhavani of Tuljapur, and regional manifestations of Shiva.
• Solar or Lunar affiliations recorded in clan scrolls (shakhavali), aligning the household with classic Vedic royal traditions.

Lineage status determined marriage alliances, diplomatic appointments, and village leadership positions known as Patilships. While British colonial records categorized Marathas broadly into agricultural and warrior classes, the Gaikwad clan maintained strict distinctions regarding marital ties, preserving their status within the upper echelons of Deccan aristocracy.
