Every Time Jimmy/Steve Vanished and Returned on 'Shameless'—the Clues You Missed
By Marcus Vance
The writers kept their biggest twist completely under wraps until the final seconds of the Season 4 finale, "Lazarus." As the closing credits rolled, a camera tracked a sleek sports car pulling up to the curb outside the Gallagher residence. Inside sat a mystery woman, played by Dichen Lachman, and a shadowy passenger. When the man turned his face toward the camera, it was Justin Chatwin. The woman asked if he was going to go inside. He replied, "Not tonight," and she addressed him by a completely new name: Jack.
The reveal sent shockwaves through the fandom. Chatwin's return had been kept secret even from the majority of the production crew. The explanation for his survival emerged later: Nando had spared his life, forcing him into brutal manual labor on a cocoa plantation in South America before Jimmy escaped. The yacht trip was not an execution. It was an extraction into modern indentured servitude.
