From the start, Michelle Rodriguez refused to play Letty Ortiz as a passive girlfriend. During rehearsals for the 2001 original, Rodriguez famously pushed back against script directions that had Letty cheat on Dominic, arguing that street culture demanded fierce loyalty. Her insistence on raw authenticity gave Letty an edge that resonated deeply with theatergoers, transforming her into one of action cinema's premier female fighters.
In recent years, Rodriguez has leveraged her status to demand broader industry changes. Prior to signing on for F9, she publicly insisted that the production hire female screenwriters to give the ensemble's women substantive dialogue and solo arcs rather than relegating them to cheerleaders in the pit crew. Her performance in 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves proved her comedic and dramatic range outside the driver's seat, yet she remains fully committed to concluding Letty's decades-long arc alongside Diesel.
Jordana Brewster, portraying Dom's sister Mia, navigated a distinct creative evolution. After sitting out key installments due to Brian O'Conner's narrative retirement, Brewster returned to central storylines after fan demand highlighted her importance as the emotional foundation of the Toretto family. Brewster has balanced her action presence with independent film production, television roles, and sustained advocacy for children’s healthcare, demonstrating a durable career footprint outside Universal’s garage doors.
