Does Tite Kubo Actually Despise Shuhei Hisagi? the Truth Behind Bleach's Biggest Running Gag
Shuhei Hisagi arrived in the Soul Society arc sporting a visual profile that screamed shonen protagonist: a jagged face scar, a sleeveless black uniform, choker bands, and a 69 tattoo etched into his left cheek. His release command for Kazeshini, "Reap", unleashed dual, scythe-like twin blades connected by chains. Visually, he looked dangerous, severe, and lethal.
Kubo pulled the rug out immediately.
Instead of an aloof assassin, Hisagi proved to be earnest, anxious, and deeply burdened by responsibility. In the canon Bleach omake sketches printed at the back of manga tankobon volumes, Kubo systematically demolished Hisagi's cool exterior. Readers watched him buy an electric guitar he could barely play, pine pathetically over Rangiku Matsumoto while striking out at every party, and attempt to look intimidating in the Seireitei Bulletin only to be ridiculed by his peers.
The gag became an institutional staple within the fandom. Kubo leaned into the contrast between Hisagi's grim appearance and his deeply mundane social shortcomings. Whenever a situation called for an honorable Shinigami to stumble through an awkward social encounter, Hisagi took the fall.
