Did Jon B Write and Produce 'They Don't Know' Alone? Unpacking the Songwriting Credits
By Robert Thorne
To understand how "They Don't Know" fit into the sonic architecture of late-90s R&B, consider the division of labor across the key singles released from the Cool Relax campaign between September 1997 and mid-1998:
| Single Track | Official Songwriting Credit | Production Credit | Peak Chart Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Don't Say" | Tim Kelley, Bob Robinson | Tim & Bob | No. 68 Hot 100 / No. 34 R&B |
| "They Don't Know" | Jonathan Buck | Jon B | No. 7 Hot 100 / No. 2 R&B |
| "Are U Still Down" (feat. 2Pac) | Jonathan Buck, Tupac Shakur, Johnny Jackson | Johnny J | No. 29 Hot 100 / No. 2 R&B (Combined) |
| "I Do (Whatcha Say Boo)" | Tim Kelley, Bob Robinson, Jonathan Buck | Tim & Bob, Jon B | Radio Promo Single |
The comparative data illustrates a crucial industry reality. While 550 Music allocated substantial budgets for outside hitmakers like Tim & Bob, Jon B’s entirely self-contained composition outperformed every externally produced single on the record, ultimately pushing Cool Relax to double-platinum status with over 2 million copies sold in the United States.
