Deconstructing the Disgusted Face Meme: Viral Misconceptions and Real Context
By James H. Sterling
Few images dominate comment sections quite like the Homelander disgusted face. Taken from Prime Video’s satirical superhero series The Boys, the clip features actor Antony Starr fixing his gaze downward, his jaw tensing as his lips curl into a quiet, nauseated sneer. On social media, users deploy this disgusted look gif to mock bad cooking videos, tone-deaf influencers, or awkward interactions.
The actual scene has nothing to do with trivial annoyance. Within The Boys, that specific look captures a hair-trigger psychopath grappling with profound alienation, vanity, and murderous contempt. Homelander is not merely grossed out. He is calculating whether exterminating an entire room of human beings is worth the public relations headache.
Starr builds this facial expression meme through micro-movements: twitching ocular muscles, a stiffened neck, and dead, unblinking eyes. Stripped of the ominous orchestral score and corporate-fascist subtext, the gesture morphs into casual distain. The actor’s masterclass in depicting borderline unhinged sociopathy becomes a convenient punchline for a ruined morning commute.
