Much of the recent confusion stems from features in the paid tier, Snapchat Plus, which debuted at $3.99 per month and introduced new analytical badges. The most controversial among these is the Friend Solar System.

When subscribers view a profile, a badge may display a planet representing their rank in that user's top eight friends. If you appear as Mercury, you are that user's closest friend; Neptune places you eighth. Following user feedback concerning digital anxiety and relationship friction, Snap modified the feature, making the solar system badge opt-in rather than visible by default.

Crucially, this system still calculates rankings strictly using direct message volume. It does not track profile views. A subscriber cannot pay to see how many times you clicked their username, nor can they view a list of quiet profile visitors. The subscription provides insight into mutual interaction rankings, not passive monitoring.
