Death Note: Why Did Mello Kidnap Takada and Die? Everything Fans Need to Know
The sequence begins on January 26, 2010 in the manga narrative (adapted into episode 35 of the anime). Kiyomi Takada, serving as NHK television anchor and public mouthpiece for Kira, was travelling under heavy police protection. Mello staged an aggressive, high-speed interception on a motorcycle, wearing a full helmet to shield his face from prospective Shinigami eyes. Aiding him was Matt, real name Mail Jeevas, another Wammy's House alumnus who orchestrated a smoke grenade distraction before being surrounded and fatally shot by Takada's armed escort.
Mello intercepted Takada, forced her into a delivery truck, and demanded she strip naked inside an enclosed compartment to strip away concealed audio bugs or GPS tracking beacons. He tossed her a blanket for basic modesty. That single concession cost him his life. Mello anticipated electronic surveillance, but he failed to calculate that Light Yagami Kira had equipped Takada with an analog contingency.
Inside her bra, Takada kept a miniature scrap of parchment cut directly from the genuine Death Note, accompanied by a small pen. Light had already shared Mello's real name and physical likeness with Takada during their private communications, information originally secured through Soichiro Yagami's fatal raid on the mafia syndicate years prior. Secluded under the blanket, Takada scribbled Mello's birth name onto the paper. Within 40 seconds, the rogue detective suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed dead over the steering wheel.
