Courage the Cowardly Dog Complete Watcher's Guide: Episodes, Lore, and Where to Stream
By Alexander Ross
For years, fans tracked updates regarding a potential prequel project titled Before Courage. First teased by Dilworth in social media posts and convention appearances between 2018 and 2020, the proposed series aimed to explore the protagonist's origins prior to being abandoned in an alleyway and rescued by Muriel.
The original pilot, "The Chicken from Outer Space," was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1996, giving Dilworth substantial creative capital during Cartoon Network's "Cartoon Cartoons" golden era. However, modern corporate restructurings altered those dynamics. Following the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, multiple animation projects faced sudden cancellations, tax write-offs, or licensing freezes.
In public remarks and interactions through his studio, Stretch Films, Dilworth revealed that while pilot outlines and scripts were developed, corporate priorities shifted away from greenlighting original, auteur-driven extensions of legacy shows. Outside of the 2021 direct-to-video crossover special Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby-Doo! Meets Courage the Cowardly Dog, the property remains preserved in its classic form rather than getting a full-scale modern television reboot.
