Complete Mafia Bike Cassette Replacement Guide: Tools, Steps, and Tuning
Slot the wheel back into the dropouts, wrapping the upper run of chain over the smallest cog. If your frame has horizontal dropouts, ensure the axle sits square so the tire is centered between the chainstays.
Tighten the drive-side and non-drive axle nuts evenly to approximately 40 Nm. Uneven torque on solid axles can cant the wheel slightly, throwing off brake rotor clearance and ruining derailleur hanger alignment.
Once the wheel is locked into place, re-evaluate your shifting:
- Check the B-tension screw: On a microSHIFT gear setup, the gap between the upper derailleur jockey wheel and the largest cassette cog is critical. Shift up into the biggest sprocket and adjust the B-tension screw so the pulley clears the tooth tips by 5mm to 8mm. If the pulley hits the cog, the derailleur will grind under wheelie loads.
- Reset the limit screws: Sight from the rear of the bike. Ensure the "H" (high) limit screw aligns the guide pulley dead-center with the smallest cog, and the "L" (low) limit screw prevents the derailleur cage from diving into the spokes when shifting into the largest gear.
- Fine-tune derailleur indexing: Shift up one gear via the handlebar shifter. If the chain hesitates to climb, turn the barrel adjuster counterclockwise half a turn to increase cable tension. If it shifts cleanly up but hesitates to drop back down to smaller cogs, turn the barrel adjuster clockwise a quarter turn. Shift through the entire block several times under moderate pedal resistance to verify that gear changes snap immediately into place.
