Cheaper by the Dozen Franchise History: from 1950 Classic to 2020S Streaming Era
Speculation surged dramatically in May 2020. Amid pandemic lockdowns, Bonnie Hunt organized a virtual Baker family cast reunion on social platforms to raise money for charity. Steve Martin, Alyson Stoner, Hilary Duff, Piper Perabo, Kevin Schmidt, Jacob Smith, Morgan York, and Forrest Landis recreated signature freeze-frames and moments from the 2003 release. The viral clip triggered widespread petitions demanding a legacy sequel where the original Baker siblings navigate parenthood of their own.
Disney, which absorbed Fox assets through its corporate acquisition, took note of the brand awareness but chose a different trajectory. Instead of funding an expensive legacy ensemble, executives greenlit the 2022 Disney Plus remake. Directed by Gail Lerner in her feature debut and written by Kenya Barris, the streaming version completely overhauled the premise. Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union led a blended, multiracial Baker family running a family-owned breakfast restaurant in Los Angeles.
While the 2022 project preserved the core theme of navigating an unwieldy household, it operated in an entirely separate universe. It was not a third chapter. It substituted Shawn Levy's slapstick football drills for contemporary cultural commentary regarding blended parenting, racial identity, and small-business survival.
