Candy Johnson Isley in the Spotlight: from Js R&B Fame to Red Carpet Glamour
Kandy Johnson did not enter the entertainment business through marriage. Born in Los Angeles, she and her sister Kim Johnson spent their formative years singing in church choirs, developing three-octave agility and tight vocal blends. By the late 1990s, the sisters found steady work as premier session vocalists, backing major acts including Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and Christina Aguilera.
Their breakthrough arrived under the moniker JS (Johnson Sisters). Discovered by Ron Isley during a studio showcase, the duo signed a recording deal that bridged DreamWorks Records and Def Soul. In 2003, they released their debut studio album, Ice Cream, an eleven-track project executive produced by Ron Isley.
The title track, featuring Ron's iconic "Mr. Biggs" persona, peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The follow-up single, "Love Angel," cemented their status as fresh voices in modern soul. Critics praised their traditional harmonies layered over contemporary mid-tempo bounce. While the duo never released a formal follow-up LP due to industry consolidation and corporate shifts at DreamWorks, JS established Kandy as a legitimate vocal force within contemporary urban music.
