Brian Molko and Helena Berg: the Untold Story of Placebo's Iconic Frontman and His Former Partner
In 2005, the couple welcomed their son, Cody. The arrival coincided with one of the darkest, most intense recording periods in Placebo band history: the production of their fifth studio album, Meds (2006).
Produced by Dimitri Tikovoï, Meds stripped away lush electronic layering in favor of raw, suffocating arrangements dealing directly with substance dependency, emotional unraveling, and fractured identity. Molko was fighting internal battles while navigating the realities of a newborn infant. In subsequent conversations about that period, Molko acknowledged that becoming a father disrupted the cycle of reckless indulgence that claimed many of his 1990s peers.
Parenthood forced a structural shift. Tour logistics were overhauled to accommodate family schedules. Molko began establishing boundaries between the performative demon on stage and the caregiver waiting offstage. Berg served as the vital anchor during this transition, holding the domestic center together while Molko toured international arenas alongside Olsdal and drummer Steve Hewitt.
