How to Make a Vtuber Model from Scratch: the Ultimate Beginner Guide
Rigging software cannot animate what does not exist. If you draw an eye directly onto the skin layer, the eye cannot close without pulling the skin into a distorted mess. Successful models start with deliberate character design tailored for articulation.
When drafting your character, establish clear front-facing, neutral-expression symmetry. Asymmetrical accessories or dynamic poses might look striking on an art board, but they complicate the initial rigging process. Ensure limbs, torso, neck, and facial features rest along clean vertical axes.
The real labor begins with layer separation. Artists must inspect every moveable element and paint what sits behind it. If your character blinks, the rig hides the eyeball and lowers the eyelid; this means the skin under the eye must be fully rendered, not left blank.
For a standard 2D avatar, prepare these isolated layers in a PSD file formatted in RGB color space at a minimum resolution of 4000 × 6000 pixels at 300 DPI:
- The Face: Face outline, forehead shadow, left/right ears, inner ear details, nose, nose highlight, left/right blush, and chin contour.
- The Eyes (Each Eye Separated): Upper eyelid line, lower eyelid line, lash highlights, pupil, iris, eye white (sclera), dynamic reflection points, and eyelid crease shadow.
- The Mouth: Upper lip line, lower lip line, upper teeth, lower teeth, tongue, and dark inner mouth cavity.
- The Hair: Front bangs, individual hair strands for physics, sideburns, ears, back hair base, and back hair tips.
- The Body: Neck, collarbone shadow, chest, shoulders, upper arms, forearms, hands, torso, and individual clothing folds.
Recent experiments with AI image generation have gained attention among solo developers attempting to skip the illustration stage. While generative algorithms can produce high-concept reference art, they invariably output flattened single-layer files. Transforming an AI-generated portrait into a production model still requires manual tracing, isolating, inpainting, and meticulous layer slicing in software like Clip Studio Paint, Photoshop, or Krita.
