Anaheim Gardenwalk's Multi-Million Dollar Hotel Shakeup: Can New Timelines Save the District?
The latest Anaheim City Council development approval directly addresses that structural deficit. City officials have long believed that on-site rooms are the missing ingredient. By anchoring the north and south ends of the mall with dedicated resort towers, the city expects to turn a pass-through center into an active, self-sustaining micro-district.
Under the amended timeline, the Prospera hotel project, a planned 400-room, full-service hotel, receives extended runway to secure final debt syndication and commence construction. Simultaneously, Westgate Resorts secured critical leeway for the Westgate Anaheim development, a proposed timeshare and resort tower complex planned for the property's eastern perimeter.
Local officials defended the extensions as a pragmatic response to macroeconomic shifts. Interest rate hikes and tightening credit markets hit construction lending throughout California between 2023 and 2025. Without a revised schedule, the development agreements risked default, leaving the parcels vacant indefinitely. The council's compromise avoided protracted legal battles while keeping developers financially tied to the Resort District.
