30 Year's of Fearless Visibility: Brian Molko & Stefan Olsdal’s Attitude Pride Honor
Early skeptics tried to dismiss Placebo as a transient shock-rock act. That narrative dissolved entirely when David Bowie intervened. Bowie heard their early demos before the debut record even hit shelves, subsequently inviting the unsigned band to support him on his 1995 Outside tour.
Bowie did not treat Placebo merely as an opening act; he became a lifelong mentor. When Placebo entered the studio to record their sophomore LP, 1998’s Without You I'm Nothing, they shifted away from raw punk frenzy toward expansive, slow-tempo explorations of codependency and depression. Bowie loved the title track so much that he recorded an alternate vocal take with Molko, resulting in a joint single that remains one of the definitive cross-generational collaborations in rock history.
During performances of the track at New York's Irving Plaza and the 1999 BRIT Awards, the visual symmetry was striking. Bowie, who had broken gender taboos in the early 1970s as Ziggy Stardust, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Molko and Olsdal. He recognized them as genuine descendants of that same lineage: musicians using personal authenticity to dismantle sexual conservatism in mainstream culture.
